The mission of the Community Service Team is to develop relationships with local organizations and provide Chapter members with service opportunities in areas related to Facilities Management (FM) while networking with other FM professionals. Our work includes areas such as FM education, sustainability and community development and it is accomplished through community partnerships, service projects, and by working with the IFMA Foundation.

Community Partnership:
So Others May Eat (SOME/CET): We have established a community partnership with the So Others May Eat/Center for Employment Training (SOME/CET) Program which prepares students for living wage careers in high-growth fields. Our signature event is an evening of “speed interviewing” in the Fall and we provide other opportunities for networking and career development during the year. The Capital Chapter was chosen as SOME/CET’s “2010 Employer of the Year”.

Service Projects:
On an on-going basis, we establish projects that are both meaningful and convenient to our members. This year we participated in the Alice Ferguson Foundation's River Clean-up at Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA on April 9th. In addition, we had a very successful Habitat for Humanity Team Build Day on June 11th in the Ivy City neighborhood in Washington, D.C. In 2010, we restored the home of a widowed Holocaust survivor to a warm, safe, dry condition through Montgomery County's Rebuidling Together Spring Rebuild Day. All of these community service projects have been tremendously successful! 

IFMA Foundation:
Our Team also serves as the liaison with the IFMA Foundation. Established in 1990 as a non-profit, 501(c) (3) corporation, and a separate entity from IFMA, the IFMA Foundation works for the public good to promote priority research and educational opportunities for the advancement of facility management. The Chapter provides financial assistance for student scholarships and research in the field of facilities management, and we are currently working to establish an accredited FM program in the DC Metro area. Team Lead

Kristen has over 20 years of experience in the field of facilities management, working primarily in the public sector for Constellation Energy and the Securities & Exchange Commission, and most recently as a facilities management consultant.  She has a B.S. in Facilities Management from Cornell University and an M.S. in Business from Johns Hopkins University, and she earned her CFM in 2010.  She has been a member of the Capital Chapter since 2009 when she immediately joined the Community Service Team, becoming the Team Lead in 2010.
